Introduction

Have you ever thought about dipping your toes into the world of trail running, but feel unsure about committing to a full race? You’re not alone. Many newcomers share the same concerns. At Trail Monkey Running Jersey, we offer a fantastic opportunity to immerse yourself in the experience without the competitive pressure—by becoming a race marshal. Come and see what its all about by helping us put on an event and we will then give you free places in later events in return for your time!

What is Marshaling?

Race marshals are the unsung heroes of any trail running event. They’re responsible for guiding runners along the correct paths, offering moral support, and ensuring everyone’s safety. Marshaling provides a unique perspective on the sport and comes with a host of benefits, especially if you’re new to trail running.

The general roles of a marshal on the course are as follows:

Part Safety Officer: Our first priority is to provide a safe course for our runners. Please keep the course free of debris and communicate any medical/safety issues to me. Also as runners come through checkpoints particularly the tail runner relay this back to me so I have an idea of how the race is progressing.

Part Cheerleader: Cheer the runners on – it’s might be a long course,  and you might be the only people they see for a few miles. Get up, get excited, and keep them moving.

Runner Hydration (water station marshals only): As runners pass by, hand water to runners as they pass. If they have bottles, try and help them as they will be working hard and might be disorientated.

Photographer – The big part of these events are the memories after the event. If we can take as many photos of the runners out on the course it provides valuable mementoes for them and good publicity for Trail Monkey races also☺

Why New Runners Should Consider Marshaling

Understanding the Race Environment

Being a marshal allows you to understand the behind-the-scenes action of a trail running event. You’ll get a sense of the race atmosphere, the community, and what to expect when you eventually take part in one yourself. I have never met someone who helped out as a marahal at one of our races who regretted it! The weather might be a bit dodgy sometimes, but with the right rainwear and a warm clothing it’s fine.

Building Confidence

Standing on the sidelines, you’ll be the first to witness the diversity of trail runners—people of all ages, fitness levels, and experiences. This can help demystify the sport and boost your confidence.

Learning the Trails

Trail running in the Channel Isles offers varied and sometimes challenging terrains. Marshaling gives you firsthand knowledge of these trails, helping you become more comfortable and efficient when you decide to run them.

Networking

This is a fabulous way to meet and interact with seasoned trail runners. You can gain insights, tips, and maybe even find a training partner to help you prepare for your own race.

Boosting Mental Strength

Supporting others during their grueling journey will not only earn you respect but also build your mental toughness. Watching others push their limits can be an inspiring experience and motivate you for your own endeavors.
