Why runners travel for this one

Beast of the East is one of Jersey’s standout trail races. You get dramatic cliff-path running, steep climbs, fast descents, technical trail and a proper finish-line feel at Devil’s Hole, all packed into a race that works brilliantly as a weekend trip.

Big coastal views

Classic Jersey North Coast scenery from start to finish.

Technical but achievable

A proper trail challenge, but still accessible if you come prepared.

Ideal weekend race trip

Fly in, race, explore Jersey, and make a weekend of it.

Beast of the East Half Marathon

Tough and beautiful in equal measure. Starting at St Catherine’s Woods, the Half Marathon heads through the woods to Rozel before joining the North Coast cliff paths and finishing at Devil’s Hole.

Distance13.1 miles
Entry Fee£43
StartSt Catherine’s Woods
Start Time09:00
Elevation~2,700 ft

Route

The route starts in St Catherine’s Woods, heads through to Rozel, then joins the North Coast cliff paths. Expect sharp climbs, hard-earned descents, exposed coastal sections and rugged trails from the gun.

Terrain

Around 95% off-road with roughly 2,700 ft of elevation. This is a proper trail challenge, not a road race with a scenic backdrop.

Capacity

Limit: 100 runners. Entries are limited to keep the event manageable on the trails and at the finish.

Aid & Finish

Checkpoints are cup-free. Water, coke and sweets will be available. Please bring your own bottle, soft flask or reusable cup.

Beast of the East 10k

Shorter, punchier, and still very much a Beast. The 10k starts at Bouley Bay and takes in classic North Coast sections before finishing at Devil’s Hole.

Distance10k
Entry Fee£33
StartBouley Bay
Start Time10:00
Elevation~1,600 ft

Route

Starting at Bouley Bay, the 10k quickly joins the northern coastal path, taking in classic sections including Wolf’s Lair, Les Platons and Bonne Nuit Bay before finishing at Devil’s Hole.

Terrain

Around 95% off-road with approximately 1,600 ft of elevation. It is shorter than the Half, but still punchy, technical and full of character.

Capacity

Limit: 50 runners. A great option if you want a proper taste of Jersey’s cliff-path trail running without stepping up to the Half Marathon.

Aid & Finish

Checkpoints are cup-free. Water, coke and sweets will be available. Finish line drinks and snacks are included.

Mandatory Kit

Applicable to both the Half Marathon and 10k. This is kit to be carried during the race, not left in the car and hoped for the best.

FAQs

Do I need trail shoes?

Yes. The North Coast is technical and can become slippery in wet conditions. Trail shoes are essential.

Is the course marked?

Yes. We use arrows and barrier tape at decision points. Having the GPX as a backup is still sensible.

Are all kit items required?

Yes. The course and weather conditions can change quickly. Mandatory kit is there for safety, not for show.

What’s at the checkpoints?

Water, coke and sweets. Please bring your own bottle or cup as checkpoints are cup-free.

Is there a cut-off?

Supportive cut-offs apply. If you are significantly outside the guidance window, you may be asked to retire for safety and event management reasons.

Is it suitable for visitors?

Yes. Jersey works very well for a race weekend, and Beast of the East gives you a proper coastal trail experience without needing a huge travel commitment.

Travel

Please plan your journey in advance. The race uses different start locations and finishes at Devil’s Hole, so lifts, taxis and planning ahead are strongly encouraged.

Half Marathon start

St Catherine’s Woods at 09:00.

10k start

Bouley Bay at 10:00.

Finish

Both races finish at Devil’s Hole.

Getting to the start

Getting to St Catherine’s or Bouley Bay on a Sunday morning can be a bit tricky. You can check the LibertyBus planner here, but taxis are likely to be the most practical option.

Lift sharing

You can use the Trail Monkey Facebook group to arrange lifts with other runners before race day.
