FAQ for Event Cancellation

1. Why was the event cancelled?
The cancellation of the event was a difficult decision made due to an insufficient number of registered participants. The CI 100k and 50k races are logistically complex, requiring significant volunteer support for a comparatively small group of runners. As the race date approached, it became clear that the turnout was going to be much smaller than anticipated, making it unfeasible to proceed with the event. The races have always been challenging and limited in size, but this year the numbers fell short to an extent that would have compromised the integrity and safety of the event.

2. Will I receive a refund?
Yes, all registered participants will receive a full refund, unless they opt to defer their entry to another event.

3. Can I defer my entry to another Trail Monkey event?
Yes, you may choose to defer your entry to another event instead of receiving a refund.

4. What happens to the race t-shirt and tracker?
As the event has been cancelled, we will not be proceeding with the ordering of race t-shirts and trackers.

5. What about those who have traveled for the event?
We deeply regret any inconvenience caused, we hope that the refund and the potential virtual event can go some way to helping with the disappointment.

6. What does this mean for other Trail Monkey Events?

Rest assured that the rest of the Trail Monkey event lineup is robust and scheduled to proceed as planned. The cancellation of the CI 100k and 50k is an isolated incident and not reflective of the overall health of our events portfolio. I am committed to assessing and potentially revamping less popular events to make them more appealing, without sacrificing the inclusive, fun, and challenging nature you’ve come to expect from us—all at a reasonable price point.

FAQ for Virtual Event

1. Can I still participate virtually?
Yes, we are offering the option for runners to complete the race virtually.

2. How does the virtual race work?
Participants can complete the race distance on a route of their choosing and submit evidence of their run for verification.

3. Will there be medals for the virtual event?
Yes, all verified completions of the virtual race will receive a finisher’s medal.

4. What is the deadline for completing the virtual event?
You can complete the virtual event anytime from the original event date until mid-December.

5. Can I get a refund and still run the virtual race?
Yes, opting for the virtual event will not affect your eligibility for a refund or deferral.

6. Is there a GPS track for the route?
Yes, a GPS track for the original race route will be provided for those who opt to participate in the virtual event. This way, you can follow the course even if you are running on your own.

7. If I was not signed up for the original race, can I take part in the virtual event & receive a medal?

Initially, I was considering allowing participation on a case-by-case basis for those who were not originally registered for the event.

After further consideration, I’ve decided to restrict the virtual event to those who were initially registered for the original race. This decision aligns with my aim to honor the commitment and preparation of our original participants. Given the challenges faced in canceling the event, including the financial loss and the effort put in by the original registrants, I feel this is the most fair and respectful course of action.

8. Will Grand Slam buckles still be given out if we complete the virtual race?
Yes, Grand Slam buckles will still be awarded to those who complete the virtual event as part of the Trail Monkey Grand Slam series, provided that the entrant was signed up for all three races in the series. The integrity of the Grand Slam series is important to us, and we recognize the effort and dedication it takes to aim for this accolade – Please contact me to discuss

9. What conditions will be placed to be considered eligible for the medal for the 100k or 50k?
To be eligible for the 100k or 50k medal in the virtual event, participants must adhere to the following conditions:

  • Complete the full distance (either 100k or 50k) within the designated time frame for the virtual event.
  • Submit a GPS tracking file or a link to your activity on a recognized tracking platform (e.g., Strava, Garmin, etc.) for verification.
  • Adhere to all local laws and guidelines while participating, including traffic laws if you choose to run on public roads.

10. Can we start at a different time than 8pm?
To be eligible for a medal, you’ll need to mirror the demands of the race, which means most of the event should be run at night. A start time window from 5pm to 10pm would be deemed acceptable.

11. Is outside help allowed during the virtual race?
For the virtual event, the aid station rules are relaxed. You can receive outside help as needed, but we encourage you to mimic race conditions as much as possible to maintain the spirit of the event.

12. Can we stash food on the course for the virtual event?
Yes, for the virtual event you are allowed to stash food or supplies along the course. However, we ask that you adhere to a Leave No Trace policy and pick up any unused items or litter to maintain the integrity of the trails.

The Trail Monkey C.I.100k

Welcome to the third edition of the longest race in the Channel Islands so far – the 2023 C.I.100km and 50k!

The Trail Monkey C.I.100k offers you the chance to tackle the ultimate challenge – running either 100km or 50km in Jersey, at night, and during the winter! This event promises to be an extraordinary and demanding experience, with limited spots available, so don’t hesitate to secure your place.

Kicking off at 8 pm, the Trail Monkey C.I.100k begins at the edge of St. Catherine’s Breakwater. The route takes you along Jersey’s picturesque North Coast, continuing to the far left at Les Landes, and then proceeding along St. Ouen’s Beach. The journey carries on to the turnaround point just a bit further along than St. Brelaides Parish Hall in St. Aubins. As an out-and-back course, participants will retrace their steps to the starting point.

The C.I.50k race starts simultaneously with the 100k event, sharing the same course. However, the 50k race concludes at the 100k turnaround point in St. Aubins.

The time limits for this event are set at 14 hours for the 100k and 7 hours for the 50k. Aid stations will be available every 10 miles for your convenience. Additionally, cutoffs will be enforced at the halfway point of the 100k race.

Adding to the toughness of this challenge, while the course is marked, markings are only provided at decision points. Therefore, prior course knowledge or access to the course GPX file is required for successful navigation. This additional requirement emphasizes the demanding nature of the Trail Monkey C.I.100k, making it an even more exceptional accomplishment for those who rise to the challenge.

The Trail Monkey C.I.50k

The Trail Monkey C.I.100k

The 50k race commences simultaneously with the 100k event, providing participants an opportunity to experience the thrill of the competition while tackling a shorter distance. This race will conclude at the halfway point of the 100k course, in the picturesque St. Aubins.

To qualify as a finisher for the 50k race, participants must adhere to a strict 7-hour cutoff time. It’s important to note that runners competing in the 100k event will not be allowed to switch to the 50k race midway through the competition. All other details and aspects of the 50k race remain consistent with the 100k event.

Embarking on the 50k race is an excellent way to immerse yourself in the excitement of the event and assess your readiness for the more challenging 100k distance in future editions. This shorter distance allows you to gauge your abilities and experience the exhilarating atmosphere of the race while setting achievable goals for personal growth and development.

  • Gloves

The The Trail Monkey C.I.100k is not only the longest race in the Channel Isles, it will take place at night starting at 8pm in the middle of winter. We will be there to support you but make no mistake this will be a tough challenge. Great prep for those doing further races in the early part of 2020 (Arc of attrition, The Spine etc)

Before You Register:

Please be aware that the Trail Monkey C.I.100k & 50k present a formidable challenge. Participants must provide proof of prior experience in similar races or ultra-marathons within the last 18 months during race sign-up. Do not enter if you are unprepared to complete the race within the strict 14-hour or 7-hour cutoff times. Failing to finish within these time limits will result in disqualification without receiving a medal. Additionally, you may be timed out at the halfway point if you fail to reach it within 7 hours. We kindly ask that you understand our position in enforcing these rules on race day.

Take note that course markings will only be provided at decision points where the route changes. This may result in several miles without markings due to a straight path or road without turn-offs. Participants are responsible for watching for signs, being familiar with the course, and/or using a GPS device with the course GPX file for navigation. Although every twist and turn will not be marked, you can successfully navigate by keeping the sea to your right on the outbound journey, and to your left on the return. Follow footpaths, pay attention to signage, and adhere to any specific instructions.

Additional Points to Consider:

Trail shoes are mandatory for the Trail Monkey C.I.100k & 50k due to potentially slippery conditions. Be prepared for the actual race distance to deviate slightly from 100km/50k. This challenging and technical race has a tight deadline to qualify for a medal, and there is a possibility that you may not complete it. Ensure you are well-trained, comfortable running at night, and familiar with the course. We highly recommend downloading the course GPX file for reference.

Water stations will be placed every 10 miles along the course. Participants are expected to carry enough water to sustain themselves between these stations. While we will supply sufficient water at checkpoints, it is your responsibility to stay hydrated. Aid stations will offer basic calorie sources, such as sandwiches, crisps, savory snacks, squash, coke, and sweets. If you require additional food, please carry it with you or place it in your drop bag. As we are going cupless, you must bring your own reusable cup for beverages at water checkpoints.

Given the race’s November timing, colder temperatures should be expected. Train accordingly and take necessary precautions to ensure your comfort and warmth during the race.

If you have any medical conditions, please place a Red Cross on your race number before race day and list your medical conditions on the back, along with an In Case of Emergency (I.C.E.) contact.
